I usually have music or the television on in my studio while I work. No problem. Right!

I use a triple beam scale with counter weights. I measured out the first ingredient and all is well. All of a sudden a ghost appears in the Louisiana mansion and.....

Yep, got absorbed in the damn movie and I can't even remember what the title of the movie is. The tare weight is no longer being calculated into my measurements so all but the first ingredient is wrong wrong WRONG!.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to recalculate to get the glaze formula in balance. An Etsy Mud Team member who was a math major in her previous life tries to help me. It's useless, I hate math.

Anyway in my attempt to correct my ghost error I mix it up and throw a test piece into the already loaded kiln.

I fuss and fidget all night as I can't believe I did something so stupid. This morning...cue the harps.....a happy accident. This is the result of my mistake. I think I'll keep this mystery glaze. A happy accident indeedCecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-25205358414541379252010-12-20T12:19:00.000-08:002010-12-20T12:27:07.918-08:00The Bisque...Such A Witty Title

As the lull sets in 5 days before Christmas I have some time to upload. Oh yeah, we were just deposited by Mr. Green duct tape cabbie. We're at the airport 2 hours early so we have lots of time to get through the security. Pretty easy to do if you have enough time.

However, that is of course your husband doesn't forget his carry on bag (again) at the x-ray machine at security. Cuz you know, if you leave a bag and walk away......the bag is suspect. Not until we reach our gate does David remember he forgot his bag (this is NOT the first time this has happened). We go back and they have to swab every item in the bag and put it through the spectrometer to make sure there is no bomb making chemicals. No problem until I remember my camera is in there and I always take my camera into my studio to take pictures. I start to get a little nervous because I have a lot of chemicals in my studio for making glazes. Now, I know that's not bomb making ingredients but...chemicals! We get through just fine and I get to relax.

The flight was uneventful and even arriving at Bush Intercontinental Airport and getting to our apartment rental was easy. Now without going into details lets just say that spending time with family is fun.......for a day or two. Beyond that....SLIT MY WRIST!!!!! I don't want to hurt anyone's feeling or anything but.......please.....SLIT MY WRIST!!! Oh, did I say that out loud?

Returning to Oregon was another story....again with the damn forgotten bag at security!!!! God.... damn.... it..... David ......you forgot the goddamn bag again!!! This time security took Davids I.D and swabbed the damn bag. It got 2 hits/alarms and we spent another 20 minutes waiting for a special TSA (ThatShitAgain) person to do more testing. By this time I have had enough of traveling, people, family and airports. "O.K. sir you can go now...they did the test wrong and nothing is wrong with your pepto bismol". Now don't we all know that NO liquids more than 2 oz are allowed in your carry on???? Oh for the love of God!!!

We finally get on the plane and get off the ground when I start smelling a foul odor. Apparently, someone had had more than their fill of Thanksgiving grub. Politely I turn on the overhead fan to disburse the stench.

Over and over again the passenger behind me farted. By mid flight I had enough and each time he farted I raised my hand up and turned on the fan saying "oh for goodness sakes...go to the bathroom already"!!! He didn't get the hint.

I'm trying to ignore the stench when I look out the window...mistake...big mistake! I see a passenger jet maybe a 20 seater whiz by about 1 mile away. Now, a mile may not seem very close but trust me.....that is close enough in plane distance.

I'm watching t.v now to try to distract me from the foul odor and anything else that may be just outside our plane. Whoa...what was that??? Turbulence....my nightmare beyond the man farting behind me. Oh please let us get to Portland in one piece....clicking my heels like Dorothy and hoping the wizard will get us there in one piece. At least that got me to forget the smell. Funny, no one else seemed to mind the Thanksgiving gas.

My clicking of my heels must have done some good because we landed in Portland unharmed. We did however have to get a cab back to where our cars were parked.

We get out to where the taxi's are lined up and yup, you got it....the only taxi in the line up that had room for 6 people was....of course, you got it....the GREEN cab/shuttle. Well, at least this one was shiny and new and clean and the heat was on. We all pile in and we tell the cabbie where to take us. Uh, he's from Russia and we are his first fare EVER. O.K. I can deal with that, or can I? He takes a few minutes and finally figures out how to start the time on the meter. Then he tells us he doesn't know his way around town and will have to use GPS. Uh oh, I feel a sweat coming on. I tell him it's easy, I'll direct you because it's only about 5 miles away. The man misses the road and wants to take us on the damn freeway. Where the hell is he going to take us and are we paying him for this???!!! I slightly raise my I'm tired of traveling voice and tell him to get off the highway. He takes a side road and I am now the voice of the pissed off GPS. Self...stay calm I tell myself. We get almost to our cars when I tell him turn at the KFC...."KFC??? What is KFC?" Kentucky Fried Chicken.....turn at the Kentucky Fried Kitchen.....all the while everyone is is silently screaming turn at KFC and are holding on to their collective butts.

Thankfully we make it and our daughter in laws car keys are safely on the seat of her car. Ahhhhh, we have one more holiday to endure.........Christmas a joyous occasion. If I even mention flying to celebrate another holiday at family out of town.....please, someone slit my wrist!!!Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-72329145669922631522010-11-28T07:16:00.000-08:002010-11-28T13:33:30.700-08:00Planes Trains and Automobiles...please slit my wrist.....part 1
For the last five years or so we've been flying to Houston Texas to spend Thanksgiving with my husbands ex-wife's family. Well, not really WITH the ex but we are very close to his ex sister in law and brother in law. Including all the gaggle of nieces, nephews and their babies. This year we brought my son his wife and the grandchildren with us.

The trek began with leaving Bend Oregon driving to Portland. O.K. so we knew a storm was coming but I've driven over the mountain pass a ton of times. We are always prepared to travel in the snow. SUV armed with tarp, chains, military folding shovel, dried fruits, pretzels and the like. Candle, matches, water including hotties.....you know those little things you can snap and keep your hands warm. I was prepared!!!! Boy Scouts got nothin' on me!!

The drive was freakin' UNBELIEVABLE! It was so damn bad there was zero visibility and we had to completely stop on the road and wait for it to clear before continuing. There were at least 4 jack knifed semi trucks. What the hell? Snow falling, ice on the windshield wipers crazy shits on the road. As a few bubbas tail gated me and then raced passed me in their bubba trucks and cars I could only hope that they would get theirs. We passed one of them after his suv slipped into the ditch covered with snow. I just smiled and waved...... See ya!

We got to the top of the mountain at a rest stop and the guy in the store wouldn't let my husband use the restroom. The snow was up to his thighs and the guy in the store had no mercy! So, David peed on the corner of the building! Nuf said. Once we got to Portland we found out that ODOT closed the mountain pass for 2 hours just behind us. Thank goodness I didn't know about this. I was already uptight!

I was hoping this was not the omen of what was to come. Nahhhh, everything will be cool.

Spent the night in Portland and called a cab the next morning to get to the airport. DO NOT USE THE GREEN CAB/SHUTTLE company in Portland Oregon!!!! Remember, there was a storm that had just passed and it was freezing.

The Shuttle came at the expected time. We all piled in but he had not turned on the heater. Again...it was FREEZING!!!! This van looked like some molester van...dirty, skanky and held together with green duct tape! I said "hey can you turn on the heater, it's cold". Huh huh huh huh....guess you all need to cuddle up back there was his answer. WTF!!! Said he just got the heater fixed yesterday. "O.K. then, can you turn on the heater...it's cold." Not until we were halfway to the airport did he turn on his.....get this.....defroster. I tell him, "hey you turned on the defroster not the heater. Can you turn on the heater?" He tells my husband Whoa better get her to the airport so she can get warm. Again, I tell him hey, turn on the heater not the defroster. Well, that's what I use not the heater. What an Asshat!

TO BE CONTINUED.......Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-66364668936148948692010-10-27T19:02:00.000-07:002010-10-28T07:26:12.850-07:00Trimming-Timing is Everything

Timing is everything!!! I had a full day and almost forgot I needed to trim this piece. Late late late....pop the thrown pieces in a plastic bag so it doesn't get bone dry and come back to it in the morning. Sheesh.

Yeah, I love it when I hear......"my 5 year old can do that" or (I really like this one.....) "I can buy that at Wally world for a lot less"! Well, take this you fart bag......that Wally world piece of junk you just bought is probably made in China by under-aged, under-paid slave labor. Way to go. I on the other hand can say I MADE this with my own two hands and there is no other piece EXACTLY like it. When someone buys this...they get a piece of me...the artist and I am the under paid laborer by choice.

As I was saying before I rudely interrupted myself.... Timing is everything. Well, it was a little dryer than I'd like for trimming but it all worked out.

Up next, the bisque fire. That will not be for maybe another week or two. I have a project and here's what I'm going to be doing. I'm going to focus on one piece and will video the stages from throwing, trimming, bisque firing and then the final stage of the raku firing.

I decided to upload videos on this blog in each stage. Once each stage is finished I will create a single video so I can use it and run a looped movie at our First Friday art walk. I would like for those who come into the gallery to be able to see the process from start to finish. Good idea right? Education for non potters to see how much time and skill it takes for that piece of work to end up in their hands and home. But here's the deal....I make these Yunomi's and I like them both but......which one is has the colors that most people like....love??? The earthtone colors are calm and so .... so.... you know....earthy! But the blue one with speck's of dark blue and green glaze combination is fab.

Just in case you don't know what a Yunomi is, here's the scoop...more or less.

A yunomi is a small cup, usually used for tea in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. The walls are generally thick enough so that the cup can be held while full of the tea. (Or, some say, the tea should never be so hot that you cannot hold the cup in your hand.) There is a more detailed description of what a Yunomi is but I won't bore you with the details. Mind you, you can use these for any drink you prefer and you don't really have to have a ceremony before you use them.

What I DO want to know is....which glaze is most appealing to you? Go to my etsy shop...(you can click on my shop link on the right side of this blog or go to www.artsielady.etsy.com to see additional views (you get a better feel for what they look like). Extra chance in the drawing if you make a Yunomi a favorite ( give it a heart).

Post a comment on this blog and at the end of August I will draw a name for that lucky person to receive a Yunomi. It was a great drive home as he is very comfortable riding in the car. I do know that he was just a touch stressed because he didn't....ahem....poop the day we got him or the next day.

Once we got back to Bend he was curious about his new home and checked every room and every corner! He settled in and I think a little overwhelmed with all his new toys, doggy bed and everything in general. We were able to meet some neighbors and he played well with the chocolate lab next door. I know TMI too much information.

Koko will get to meet another neighbor chocolate lab today..3 in a row, go figure! It's called Koko time. LOL

Our first walk of the day was 2.5 miles and it took forever. Koko wanted to smell every tree, every rock and every bush...and mind you that's a lot of sniffing. He'll be good for us. We haven't in too long of a time taken our walks or hikes. Today, I even ran just a little with him to get both of us mentally and physically ready to run. I haven't ran in over a year and I've put on weight. Ugh. Koko to the rescue. So I think we are rescuing each other.

Tomorrow....we will have our morning paper and coffee first. Well, we're gonna try to anyway.Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-60161914683638420392009-04-27T20:14:00.000-07:002009-04-27T20:47:49.173-07:00Kalani
My sweet goofy Kalani.....16 1/2 year old!!! That's a long life she spent with us. Kalani has been slowing down for some time now. This past week she had front leg problems and with her arthritis of her hind legs, well she was no longer able to walk. We knew that the time was here that she would leave us.

I first laid my eyes on her as she was being born on December 30 1992 and took her first breath. Her pink nose and paws in a squirmy little body. I took her home 6 weeks later and that was the beginning of our forever love.

If you read the book or saw the movie of Marley and Me that was Kalani!!! Yes, she did chew a hole in the wall the size of a cantaloupe. And yes, she chewed up a brand new sofa. Oy! She loved to dig up my plants and it drove me crazy. She did all of this as a young pup. Eventually, she grew out of puppy hood and into a very spunky adult. She loved the water and she even jumped off the diving board into the pool. Most of all she loved it when we moved to the coast of Oregon and she could run on the beach and chase the birds. She'd find a tide pool and flop down into it as if it was the best thing on earth.

I remember when Kahuna ran through a screen door and treed a bear, Kalani was ran right behind her. All of a sudden she put the brakes on as if she were saying "whoa there, what am I doing chasing a bear??" and ran back in the house. Kalani loved her toys. Most of her life she carried one around. When you came home she would bop you in the butt or legs with it until you would play with her or take the dang toy away.

We sent her on her way today. I'm sure Kahuna was waiting for her and now they're running around on strong healthy legs and smelling the flowers and chasing squirrels.

I was there when she took her first breath.....and I owed it to her to be there for her last. I laid there on the floor of the vet clinic with her as she peacefully went on her way.Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-37318218712510043032009-04-24T19:38:00.000-07:002009-04-25T04:28:31.420-07:00Raku Raku and More Raku!!!
It's been a while since I've updated my blog. Been super busy working in the studio. I have a raku show/sale coming up on May 9th here in Bend and I've had to really try to crank out more work. I recently got a new raku glaze recipe to try out. Boy do I love it!! The result is a stunning multi-colored piece.

While I have the whole set up for rakuing at my own studio, I have done the last two firings with RACO. That's the Raku Artists of Central Oregon. Pottery is a lonely art. Usually potters are working away...a one man operation shall we say. So it's nice to spend time with like minded artist. We ooooo and ahhhh over each others work. Oh, we're a motley crew to say the least. But it is a very laid back group and we share information and have a good time. What a wonderful way to spend a day!Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-5934045261351676512009-03-22T08:25:00.001-07:002009-03-22T08:43:46.932-07:00It's Raining Chicklets!!!!

It's been some time since I tried my hand at making a teapot. I made four of them and you can really see the difference from the 1st teapot to this 4th teapot. I thought the fourth one really nailed it on the head. I had it bisqued for a long time but I just couldn't choose a glaze for this one. It had to be just right and the glaze really had to "speak" to me. Well, as you can see...it spoke to me alright!

As a kid I use to love getting the little packets of chicklet bubble gum. Yeah, I swallowed my gum. I couldn't help it...it was oh so sweet and yummy. When I saw this glaze I thought of the colors of that gum. I was nervous. I was hoping that the kiln goddess was going to be kind to me and fire this piece exactly as it needed to be. I peeked into the kiln last night at 900 degrees through the peep hole with flashlight in hand. Oh....is it???? Can it be??? I had a restless sleep last night knowing that I would be able to open the kiln as the peep see was hopeful.

With camera in hand in my silk not so warm robe... I skurried down the back deck stairs at dark thirty to the studio and BAM!!!! Slipped on the cold wet stairs and fell on my butt. Not to worry though, I held my camera up by it's straps and it was safe. I called her Huna, babygirl, princess. She was 16 years old and she was my best friend. She was funny, sweet and lovable. She first came into my life when I found a note on the kitchen counter...MOM, DO NOT LOOK IN THE LAUNDRY ROOM. Love Brad. Uh, yeah right! There she was this pitiful sad eyed little puppy. What was my 12 year old thinking?? We can't have another dog. What kind of fool has 3 dogs?? Uh, that would be me. Three months later I gave her to my friend Traci who would take good care of her. Two days later she called and said "Ceci, you have to take Kahuna back. Kahuna was miserable. O.K. I said bring her back. Traci drove her back and as soon as Kahuna saw she was on our little street....she pooped in excitement! Lordy! I guess Kahuna knew where she needed to be.

One of Kahuna's little habits was to drag toilet paper from the bathroom through the house when we were gone doing errands. We'd come home and "Kaaaahuuuunnnaaa" I would drawl out in a low tone. Her floppy ears would pull back and just the tips of the bottom of her ears would curl under. At the same time she had this funky drawn back grin and she would squeal because she got caught....again. We don't have to close the doors anymore.........I wish we did.

She was always watching out for me..her mama dog. When we lived on the Oregon coast. I used to sleep with only the screen door closed so we would have fresh coastal air circulating. One very early morning she saw a bear on my back deck and she went flying through the screen door and treed the bear barking like a mad dog. Ah yes, thanks Kahuna for protecting me. In these last years she loved to sit outside smell the fresh cool air and watch the neighbors walk by with their dogs. She would bark in protest to let them know they were in her space and she was watching over her family. That's all she could do was bark. Only her barks would not be strong but would fade out due to her age. But still, she was doing her "job" of protecting her family.

As she got older she really stuck close to me. Wherever I was she wanted to be there also. Even with her aching hind legs she would force herself to get up and follow me. As she aged she had physical problems. When she was not feeling well and scared...yes she would get scared. I would lay with her on the floor sometimes for a couple of hours. I would stay with her there until she was calm and comfortable petting her rubbing her ears and talking to her in soft tones all the while. She had been there for me during the best and yes some very awful times in my life. She knew when I was hurting or sad and she would lay at my feet or put her head on my lap and one little lick on my hand to let me know that she loved me and would always be there for me.

Those of you who share the love of family pets know this same loss. There is an emptiness. So I grieve the lost of my best friend. I love you my Huna girl......kisses.... These mugs were made by another potter named Matt Brown in Moss Beach California (www.MossBeachCeramics.etsy.com).

The sculpture behind the mugs is titled "Deep Peace" by artist Sally Kimp an Arizona artist purchased at the Mockingbird Gallery in Bend Oregon (www.mockingbird-gallery.com)

I was lucky enough to have this potters help in fine tuning my blog site. Hey! I'm a potter not a technoid. Anywho I purchased from him these 3 yunomi mugs. There are no handles and they have the most beautiful earthy texture and I love the colors. Since I've received these in the mail I make every excuse to have a nice hot drink so I can use these mugs. Yeah yeah I can make my own mugs since I'm a potter also. Sure but every individual is different and every potter has their own take on their art. Not to mention that the art of clay is so diverse from low fire to high fire. Salt firing to Raku, High fire, electric, gas, Anagama and the list goes on and on. As an artist, I can appreciate the art that others create. And now....these belong to me, go get your own!Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-53682647615536267462009-01-25T18:13:00.000-08:002009-01-25T20:31:43.534-08:00Different strokes!
I think I mentioned on a previous post that I was going to create work that I normally hadn't done before. So far so good. As you can see in these pictures they are not complete since they have not been glazed. I wanted to bring you along on my journey as I delve into areas I have not been before. One of the pitchers was completely hand-built and textured. The smaller ones were wheel thrown with hand-built spouts and handles added. Hey, I even threw some glasses on the wheel to go with the pitchers. Now let's see how they turn out once they've been glazed!!

I've also been making baking dishes. Part of the dishes have been wheel thrown and the bottoms were slab built. Handles were extruded and added to finish the piece. These also are in the bisqued stage and will have to be glazed and fired to complete. Of course I will post pictures once they are done. At the moment I'm waiting for some commercial glazes to be delivered so I can test them on some tiles first. Don't want to apply a glaze to a piece that I don't know how the heck it'll turn out. Thank goodness WE in America have that right to disagree. But there is an energy among many of us as we see a new future for every American and certainly a dream that conversations between countries and religions will result in respect and understanding of our differences. Our differences makes us all unique and we should rejoice in that. I have chosen to post the lyrics of a song that moves me and reflects what today means to me. I would ask that if you are reading this....please read the lyrics and think about what it says and what it can mean for all of us.

The Peace image above is a peace tile from a fellow potter in Santa Fe New Mexico Todd of tmusichans studio. This is so out of the ordinary for me to make items for the holidays. Not my norm for sure. Anyway, I will be stepping "outside of the box" so to speak as far as my pottery creation is concerned. First was making things to sell for the holidays. Another thing is creating other items I normally don't make. Until the Etsy Mud Team challange for a mug swap I really didn't make mugs. So...yup, I started making mugs. Another thing I've been making are pitcher sets for summers sitting on the deck drinking Ice Tea or Mint Juleps. I've gotta say that so far I have impressed myself. Ha!! They are still not glazed but are waiting to be bisqued fired. I will be blogging more about my process including photos so there will be more to come. Leave me comments or suggestions or even something just for moral support. Hey, it wouldn't hurt.Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-30308946267278787742009-01-01T14:31:00.001-08:002009-01-12T16:00:36.045-08:00New Years 2009We have now said goodbye to 2008 and Hello 2009!!!! For us, we had a very quiet ring in of the new year. Had some neighbors over for prime rib dinner watched a little of the Twilight Zone Marathon...that was good by the way and worked in the studio for a short while. Pretty dull stuff on the scale of things. However, one thing that I've missed and reflect on EVERY year is the New Years celebration that is shared in Hawaii.

You see, I was born and raised there and most of my family is still there. Hawaii is ....for lack of my own term "a melting pot" of ethnicity's. This tradition of fireworks is one of the Asian influence that continues on despite the fact that fireworks are illegal in the state of Hawaii. When my mom was still alive I would call her a few minutes before the clock struck midnight in Hawaii. I would then have her bring the phone outside and I would just listen. It was marvelous!!! The sound of the waves and waves of fireworks going off is just amazing. Imagine this......people stringing up the hundreds if not thousands of firework on these makeshift self-supporting rails and lighting them all at once. Maybe you can't imagine this not really have experianced this first hand but I assure you it is a sight to see and hear. The video I have here is just a small slice of what it is like to be there. Usually visibility is 50 feet once everyone starts to light the fireworks. And the island is just one huge plume of smoke from one end to the other. I know, it's not so eco-friendly especially in these times of global warming. And people with respiratory problems have a hard time with all the smoke but but but..........This is just, you know something of my childhood and young adult life growing up in the islands. I love this and I will always miss this.

So, I wish for all a good 2009 filled with the much needed PEACE......a renewed and responsible PROSPERITY ...... and last but not least....PATIENCE for one another.Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4635218901367202791.post-80165313332089011222008-12-17T08:51:00.000-08:002009-01-26T16:05:49.354-08:00Ahhhh, Winter!
It's winter and everything that goes with it could be good or bad. I choose good. It's white (but cold) and can give one a sense of peace. God knows when you wake up in the early morning after a good snow it is really really quite and peaceful. You know even things not so pretty on a normal day to day basis appears to be beautiful. Let's not yet think about what it's going to be like when it starts to melt. Ick! By the way I took this photo when I went snow shoeing. It was beautiful!

I know I haven't posted anything new for some time but it has been a busy time. I've been selling more than ever on my Etsy site http://www.artsielady.etsy.com. Now, I have a marketing department (me), a billing department (yup, that would be me again), a collection department (damn skippy, pay up! me again), customer service department (did I say "service"??) and a shipping department. If you could hear me you would hear me change my voice a la the Exorcist for each task depending on my mood. I do have a production department as well but that person has been AWOL. Sheesh.

Another thing that kept me away for a short while was a visit by my high school friend. I haven't seen her since just after high school and trust me people, that was a long time ago. She was in town for business and we spent as much time as possible together. It was very cool we didn't miss a beat. It was like we never had time separate us. She and her co-worker Corinne live in Waianae Hawaii. Go Sea Riders! So you can imagine the weather shock to their systems! June (my classmate) refused to even look at the snow coming down all the while screaming "no, I'm not looking I have to get home tomorrow". June....did you think that was going to stop the snow. I took pleasure in their experience here in Bend. The weather (uh huh, it was cold!) the festive holiday lights in the Old Downtown the eh hem.......gambling! Here in Oregon we have the pleasure of Indian Casinos, however none are close by. HOWEVER, most taverns have Vegas style gambling machines. We had a blast! Did we win?? I'm not sayin'.

Man, gotta tell you it brought me back to da good ol' days in Waianae. We did get a chance to catch up about a lot of my classmates. What they're up to, kids, where they live and what they're doing. Very coolamis!!! I expect we'll be planning a trip back home to Hawaii and NO tourist stuff...that's for the tourist. For sure we'll be staying with June and her husband and ohhhhh I can smell the ocean and feel the warmth of the sun now. Locals rock!

That brings me to it ain't warm here and more snow is a comin'!!! So for all of you out there who are dealing with the cold weather. Snuggle up by the fireplace with your better half (I imagine that could be your best friend....the dog silly) hahaha and have yourself a nice mug of hot buttered rum. Mmmmmmm Yummy! Here's a recipe.

Oh, and by the way if you need a cool mug for that hot buttered rum that is beautifully handcrafted, go to http://www.etsymudteam.craft-sense.com. You may find something you just have to have!!

Hot Buttered Rum

Batter

1/2 C unsalted butter, softened (1 stick)
1 1/3 C firmly packed brown sugar
1 Pint vanilla ice cream, softened
1 t ground nutmeg
1/2 t ground cinnamon
1/2 t ground cardamom
1/2 t vanilla

Coctail (per serving)

2 T frozen batter
3/4 C boiling water
1 1/4 ounces rum (2 T plus 1 1/2 t)
1 Pat butter

To make batter: Combine butter, brown sugar, ice cream, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla with electric mixer to create a smooth batter. Pour mixture into a plastic container with lid and seal. Place in the freezer.

To make cocktail:For each cocktail, place 2 T of the frozen batter in a mug and add 3/4 cup of boiling water. Now I know there isn't a ton of items in the shop but what better time to sell out and start with a new crop of work?? I would have been creating more work but I'm still working on my fish order. I know I know, you're tired of hearing about my fish. Well, how do you think I feel about making all those fish? Yeah, you got it. Now, I'm not ungrateful about getting this order but I am sooooo sick of them at this point!

Let's get to the nitty gritty of this post. I want to SELL OUT! Really. Not just to get sales, I really want to start fresh this coming year. So help me make this happen. If not I just may go crazy with the hammer and break every remaining piece. I love love love to cook and feed the masses. O.K. so here's the deal. My mom always made the best turkey and I now follow in her steps. This is not the most traditional recipe but it will almost surly be the best turkey and gravy you have ever had!! No kidding!! This year was the first time I have shared the recipe and I've decided to share this with you. I want to keep this recipe out there in honor of my mom Bernie Lindo of Makaha Hawaii. She's no longer around but if this recipe is....well....so is she. I call this Asian Turkey

Ingredients

Turkey

1 jar Black bean with garlic sauce (found in Asian market)

1 round onion

1 bunch green onion

1 bunch (about 5 stalks) lemon grass (must be fresh)

salt

2 T vinegar

Directions

rub the outside and the cavity of the turkey with salt and set aside

slice the round onion, green onion (into 1 inch strips). Every year when I make this (even though I'm not with my family in Hawaii) I remember the family gathering and just having fun. So take time to enjoy life, family and friends because you know......we only get one time around and we better make it a good one!!! However, I've got to say that sales exceeded what we all expected. So all in all it ended well. I actually sold 43 pieces on the first day of the sale and was very pleased. I don't know yet the number of pieces I sold on the second day but I did see two additional sales of my work in the first 30 minutes of the second day. Yeah, you can say I'm happy. My goal was to sell as much as possible to deplete my inventory so I can start on a whole new "crop" of my work.

So get this.....I also got a custom order for an additional 51 of my handbuilt fish (see picture above) for a local graphic design business. 51!!!! Holy %@!!! The finish date is December 18,2008. Breath in, breath out.

Lesson learned...does there always have to be a lesson learned??? No, not really. What I do know is that when I finally jumped in to do this show/sale for the weekend....it ended up with some fun time, meeting other artist, a custom order and the drive to STEP UP MY GAME!!!
Cecihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07070129140768012547noreply@blogger.com2
